Spirit Halloween disappears from top retail leases list
Grocers led way in September, taking top two spots and three overall
Grocers led a rather subdued list of September’s largest retail leases in New York City.
Supermarkets and grocery stores secured three of the nine spots on the list, including first and second place. The rest of the list was, as always, a mixed bag, so to speak.
It featured high fashion, Scandinavian furniture, bubble tea, and, briefly, everyone’s favorite pop-up Halloween store.
1) Amish Market | 731 Ninth Avenue | Hell’s Kitchen | 15,000 sf
The grocer signed a five-year renewal in Hell’s Kitchen, where it has been since 1991. James Famularo and Evan Roteman of Meridian Retail Leasing represented the landlord, Aetna Realty.
2) Met Fresh | 67-09 Fresh Pond Road | Ridgewood | 14,000 sf
The grocery chain signed a 20-year lease for its fourth location and first in Ridgewood. A three-member Verada Retail team including Nathaniel Mallon and Brendan Thrapp represented the tenant while Marc Sitt and Dorel Melloul of Kassin Sabbagh Realty represented the landlord, YYY Realty.
3) Saint Laurent | 70 Gansevoort Street | West Village | 13,000 sf
The luxury clothing brand signed a 15-year lease for a new flagship location in Manhattan, its third location in the borough. A three-member Cushman & Wakefield team including Mike O’Neill and Jason Greenstone represented the tenant while the landlords Aurora Capital Associates and William Gottlieb Real Estate were represented by Aurora’s Jared Epstein and Jake Bank.
4) Spirit Halloween | 620 Sixth Avenue | Chelsea | 10,000 sf
The Halloween megastore posted on social media that it had agreed to a sublease in Chelsea for a piece of the space of a recently closed Bed Bath & Beyond. But after Commercial Observer posted a story about the 60-day deal, it fell through, the retailer told the publication. A spokesperson for the landlord, RXR, confirmed that news.
4) Carl Hansen & Søn | 145 East 57th Street | Plaza District | 9,063 sf
The Scandinavian furniture company inked a new lease. Evan Clements and Amanda Keller of Atlantic Retail represented the tenant while a three-member ABS Partners Real Estate including John Brod and Mark Tergesen represented the landlord in-house.
5) Delight Bazar Supermarket | 1041 Coney Island Avenue | Flatbush | 6,500 sf
The supermarket inked a 10-year lease. Raj Whadwa of KK Capital Group represented the tenant while Meyer Dagmy of MOD Commercial Realty represented the landlord, Foster and Coney Realty.
6) Sweet Cats Cafe | 21 East 17th Street | Flatiron | 3,900 sf
The bubble tea shop signed a lease. Nathalie Wang of Corcoran Group represented the tenant while Jonata Dayan and Brett Weiss of Resolution Real Estate Partners represented the landlord, 77 NY @ 17th.
7) 1611 ENY LLC | 1611 East New York Avenue | Ocean Hill | 3,000 sf
The tenant signed a 15-year lease. Josh Augenbaum of Augenbaum Realty represented both the tenant and the landlord, Ryan & Nicole.
